Random Thoughts

Writers often divide the elements of a story up into categories: plot, character, theme, subtext, symbolism, setting, action, and so forth. The strictness of those divisions, however, is at least somewhat artificial. As I write, I'm going to try to remember the ways I can make one category do the work of another.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Finishing The Edits of DOOOOM!! Hurray! After my crit group savaged--er, offered their thoughts on--my current main project, I had to go back in and edit/replot/rewrite the first third of the beast. But now that's done! As soon as I update the outline, summary, timeline, and synopsis accordingly, I'll be back to ALL! NEW! words.

Featured Market

Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores wants SF/F fiction, nonfiction, videos, and graphic novels.

We are looking for well written original stories in science fiction, fantasy, myth, legend, fairy tales, and eldritch, in written, podcast, video, and/or graphic story form, and from around the world.  We’re accept both serious and humorous work. We like science fiction in all its states of matter, from solid to gaseous to plasma, i.e., from hard as steel to as insubstantial as interstellar space.  If you use real existing science, please get it right.

We’re not looking for angsty romance, fanfics*, horror, hate, blood & guts, excessive violence, sex, axe-grinding, or stories that leave readers feeling they’ve had the energy and joy sucked out of them.

The basics: SF/F, any length, $.06/word, reprints accepted. Guidelines at http://cosmicrootsandeldritchshores.com/submissions/.

Aswiebe's Market List Update 2015-11: Liminal Stories

Random Thoughts

Many writers feel like time is a limitation on their writing ability. With two small kids at home, you can bet I'm one of them. I often try to squeeze in a little distracted, multitasking writing-related work wherever I can: on the bus, at the library while the kids play, waiting for preschool to open, and so forth. Recently I realized that sometimes this leaves me feeling more burnt-out--and less productive--when my actual dedicated writing time comes around. The moral of the story? I'll let you know if I figure it out. It seems finding balance is a constant, ever-changing struggle.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Thinking about 2016! I've got several things in progress.

In March, I have a science fiction story coming out over at Escape Pod. It'll be awesome to hear a reader's interpretation of my story.

In July, I'll be at CONvergence, the largest Minnesota SF/F convention.

And of course, I plan to be wrapping up a couple of large writing projects and seeing where they go from there.

Looking forward to it!

Featured Market

Liminal Stories wants strange, unsettling, weird fiction.

Liminal is searching for stories of a particular tone and tenor, regardless of form.  We like stories that are strange and unsettling, sharp-edged and evocative.  Although we will consider any genre, we have a soft spot for weird fiction, magical realism, soft sci-fi, and those uncatagorizable stories that straddle the line between genres.  Liminal stories should linger in the mind and evoke emotion in the reader.

The basics: all genres, up to 10,000 words, $.06/word, no reprints. Fast response time. Guidelines at http://liminalstoriesmag.com/submissions/.

Random Thoughts

Someday, I'm going to get around to properly organizing and sorting my social media using all those useful tools out there. Today is not that day. Ironically, I bet that social media would have lots of good suggestions, too.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

The Journal of Unlikely Academia's newest issue is all about unlikely academia! Librarians, monsters, teachers, metaphysics, and more. It includes my story, "And Other Definitions of Family," about a xeno-anthropologist who takes a very intimate approach to field research.

Excerpt:
She didn't have a client appointment scheduled, but they all knew she welcomed drop-ins. She checked the peep-cam. Optimal lighting, background soundscape, clothing level, hairstyle, and pheromone spray all depended on the client's species. Her eyebrows lifted involuntarily when she saw the bat-like Bitocktee male at her door.

"You are the female human who rents out her reproductive system?" his translator chirped.

Read more (free!) in The Journal of Unlikely Academia online or sign up for their free newsletter to download the issue as an ebook.

Aswiebe's Market List Update 2015-09: Metaphorosis

An Iota of Interest

One of the pieces of writing advice that is often heard is, "Focus on one project. Finish what's in front of you first." That's all well and good until you're deep in the weeds of editing and your writer's soul is crying out for something! anything! more creative to do.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

Gritting my teeth and plowing through edits on my main project. Of course, this has left my creative side running in circles like an insane gerbil. As a sanity-preserving measure, I've started up a side project to write on for half an hour on those days when I don't expect to get to the writing part of "writing." It's a fluffy urban fantasy about a half-dragon, half-succubus in a magic traveling hotel. I don't even plan to submit this to any major book publishers unless my writing group (unexpectedly) adores it. However, right now it's just what I need to write. A little. Sometimes. When I can't write on another project.

Farstrider Magazine wants fantasy of all kinds, especially lighter fantasy. The current submission period closes 8/31/2015.

We are a Fantasy magazine, and we welcome submissions of all types that can fall under that umbrella.  We may become more selective over time, but as we get started here I'd like to cast as wide a net as possible and see what mysterious and unique stories can be pulled out from the deep.  Of course, we still have our preferences.  We are partial to lighter stories of whimsy and wonder, and would love to see stories with a sense of humor along the lines of Terry Pratchett, Gail Carriger, or a World of Warcraft quest about lost dwarven ale.   These are the stories that will likely rise to the top, but don't let that keep you from submitting something outside the boundaries of this guideline if it is one that you are particularly proud of.

The basics: Fantasy, 1,000 - 4,000 words, pays $.03/word, no reprints. Guidelines at http://www.farstridermag.com/submit.html.

Aswiebe's Market List Update 2015-07: Mothership Zeta

An Iota of Interest

Gender balance is a tricky thing, especially in a historical setting. When women don't have much ability to choose their lives, they make less interesting characters. If you're writing science fiction or fantasy, though, a disruptive event (like an apocalypse) can make anything possible. Of course, a character's past will change how they act. And that makes the story a lot more interesting. For more about this, you can see my upcoming guest post at http://catherineldf.livejournal.com/ within the next few days.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

I'm done with conventions! Deep sigh of relief. I have a couple of other things coming up in a few months, but nothing immediate. This feels verra nice. Mostly I'm working on beating a novel proposal into shape, coming up with an elevator pitch, and struggling with title possibilities. Titles are my nemesis. The best I can hope for is "not eye-gougingly horrible."

* How Do We Talk About Strong Female Characters [characterization]: http://www.tor.com/2015/06/16/how-do-we-talk-about-strong-female-characters

Featured Market
New from Escape Artists (the people who brought us Escape Pod, PodCastle, and Pseudopod), Mothership Zeta wants science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories that are fun.

The robot who fights a dinosaur, not the robot who explores its lack of humanity and deactivates itself. The nagini who goes on an adventure, not the nagini who is tortured and drowns herself. The blonde woman who kills monsters, not the blonde woman who gets ripped apart by monsters. Fun doesn’t necessarily mean “funny,” and stories can have conflict and darker elements, but we want stories that leave the reader satisfied, usually in a positive way. Bittersweet is okay, tragic is not. (Unless you’re Cabin in the Woods. A killer unicorn buys you some credit.)

The basics: funny SF/F/H, 6,000 words max, pays $.06/word, no reprints. Guidelines at http://mothershipzeta.org/submission-guidelines/. They're currently closed for submissions, so plan ahead!

An Iota of Interest

I've found it gives me an advantage to do a detailed scene outline immediately before writing the scene. For one, it separates the "trying to find good words" from "trying to figure out what happens." Divide and conquer. For another, if I find myself falling into part of the scene as I outline it, that's the best time to switch over to actually writing it.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

'Tis convention season! I'll be appearing at two Minneapolis conventions, 4th Street Fantasy Convention (June 26th-28th) and CONvergence (July 2nd-5th). I'll be appearing on panels at both, and I have a reading at CONvergence!

4th Street Fantasy's panel schedule is not yet finalized, but I know for certain that my schedule includes moderating "Surviving Yourself: Self-Care for Creative Types."

My schedule at CONvergence has me on the "Using Folklore as Inspiration" panel. I will also be performing an excerpt from my post-apocalyptic steampunk novel, A Circus of Brass and Bone, at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3, 2015. There will be donuts!

Life changes. People change. What works best for your writing routine may change as well: setting, optimal time of day, writing medium, etc. Even if you think you've figured it out, try different things from time to time.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

"And Other Definitions of Family" will be appearing in Unlikely Story's June issue, The Journal of Unlikely Academia.

Defying Doomsday is a pro-paying anthology of "apocalypse-survival fiction with a focus on disabled characters."
  • (One of) the protagonist(s) must be a character with disability, such as physical impairments, chronic illnesses, mental illnesses and/or neurodiverse characters etc. We will consider stories with characters experiencing all kinds of disability and hope that submitting authors will be creative with the possibilities.
  • We feel strongly that disability or chronic illness (etc) should have an impact on the character’s life and during the post-apocalyptic event. For example, a character with a deadly peanut allergy in a world where peanuts have been wiped out by a plague isn’t going to quite cut it. However, we are not looking for issue stories or stories where disability is the sole focus of the narrative.
The basics: SF only, 3,000-7,000 words, pays $.07/word, no reprints. Guidelines at http://defyingdoomsday.twelfthplanetpress.com/submissions/.

Editor's Note
This month I was able to attend the annual AWP conference, which "provides community, opportunities, ideas, news, and advocacy for writers and teachers of writing." It's primarily aimed at literary fiction writers, academics, and publishers of literary fiction. As you know, I write speculative fiction: fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I went to the conference not sure how much it had to offer me. It was good. The literary fiction genre has certain conventions that make certain writing challenges more visible. Pointing out solutions is easier. And the solutions apply across genres!

In general, getting multiple perspectives is very useful. Don't wear genre-blinders!

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

As I mentioned in my editorial, I attended AWP! That was a weekend, alright.

Oh, and an anthology I have a story in is now out!

Minnesota writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror come together in By Polaris Bright, the third annual MinnSpec anthology. My (reprinted) story, "Diplomatic Relations," involves the lengths a group of human diplomats must go to in order to establish peaceful relations with a newly contacted alien species. Think Star Trek, but X-rated. Definitely not for everyone, but just right for some people.

Betwixt publishes speculative fiction of all sorts.

Betwixt publishes speculative fiction of all sorts—fantasy, science fiction, speculative horror, slipstream, weird fiction, steam/diesel/cyber/etc.punk, you name it. We particularly like stories that smash genre boundaries to smithereens, but we also love fresh takes on established genres and in-depth explorations of ultraspecific niches. Experiments in form and style are welcomed enthusiastically—but a straightforward narrative with tight, crisp language is just as beautiful. When it comes down to it, we want stories that will amaze us, astound us, provoke our thoughts, and boggle our minds.

Editor's Note
After I finished launching my post-apocalyptic steampunk novel, I took a couple of months off from writing to try and catch up on all the writing-related things that I was (and still am, alas!) so very far behind on. Critiques! Editing! Marketing! Transcribing! Researching! Learning!

Ahem. Sadly, I am still not actually all caught up, though I did manage to get a few more short stories that had been benched for edits into circulation. I didn't start any new writing projects, though. For the longest time that seemed to be fine. Sure, I could tell that my brain was spending a few extra creative cycles on "unlikely but horrible things to worry about," but mostly I was fine. I found this worrying. If I no longer need to write, the question becomes whether I should. That's complicated.

However! Last Saturday, it happened. I felt the need gathering in a tense ball of mustwrite-haveto-nowdamnit between my shoulder blades. I found myself zoning out in the middle of talking to people, because there was an almost gravitational force pulling my attention toward my next story project.

No need for soul-searching after all. Hurray!

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

New words!

The Deep, Dark Woods anthology for horror themed to mysterious forests.

What could possibly lurking in the woods? It’s up to you to find out! Craft the scariest, most diabolical story you can. Your tale can be a horror that is based around a central moral theme or it can be a straight up splatterpunk that is only meant to shock!  We only care that your story is well crafted, original, and gives a new take on the mysterious forest trope.

The basics: themed horror, 500-8,000 words, pays $.05/word, no reprints, due by 05/31/2015. Guidelines at http://www.christinaescamilla.com/open-the-deep-dark-woods-anthology/.

There's something quite marvelous about playing around with writing-related stuff instead of driving myself to X, Y, and Z done by such-and-such a date. Taking a month off to catch up on the stacks of "to-edit" manuscripts and assorted other writing miscellanea is pretty wonderful. Give it a try the next time you finish a major project!

This Thursday, February 19th, I've got a special feature coming up on Mary Robinette Kowal's My Favorite Bit blog! I'll talk about one of my favorite parts of A Circus of Brass and Bone and all the neat background stuff that went into it.

Featured Market
Women in Practical Armor is an anthology that celebrates the empowered woman in the fantasy universe.

It’s true that the kind of female warrior who would be on the front lines in practical armor, without hiding or apologizing for her gender, has little historical precedent in the medieval societies on which much fantasy is based, but fantasy doesn’t need to have its basis in real world European history.

Evil Girlfriend Media is committed to breaking stereotypes and pushing the boundaries of speculative fiction. We encourage you to use this opportunity to do just that. Your secondary world can be based on some other culture or created out of whole cloth. It can be your proprietary universe in which you have set other works. We ask only that the protagonist be a female character who is already empowered. There are plenty of works out there about women who are struggling for acceptance or to build their self-identity. In this anthology, we would like to focus on the kinds of challenges that empowered, powerful, seasoned warriors would face.

The basics: themed fantasy, 2,000 - 5,000 words, pays $.06/word. Guidelines at http://www.evilgirlfriendmedia.com/submissions/.

Aswiebe's Market List Update 2015-01: A New Year!

Market List Logo

http://www.aswiebe.com/writing/markets.html

The next update of Aswiebe's Market List will be after 2/15/2015.
Permanent link to this newsletter in the archives: http://www.aswiebe.com/writing/archive2015.html#012015

Editor's Note
It's a new year, and I think it's going to be a great one for writing!
Here are a couple of stats. Aswiebe's Market List has 516 active, paying publications listed in it! Let's have a moment of silence for the 27 publications that died in 2014. Now let's have a loud cheer for the 131 publications that were born (or significantly changed), including 2 new super-pro markets that pay $.20/word or more. Hurray!
On a personal note, I'm looking forward to starting a new novel this year. I'm also--looking forward to is not quite the right phrase--anticipating finally doing one last round of edits and final polishing on a large number of short stories that have been patiently waiting for me to finish my last major project. I'm going to have a whole bunch of new stories in circulation in 2015, and I can't wait!

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
A Circus of Brass and Bone is released this month! If you'd enjoy traveling with a steampunk circus through post-apocalyptic wilderness and disintegrating cities, you might like to read it.

Reviews

"Read if: You would love to read about circus freaks, espionage, war elephant golems, intrepid female ship captains, monkeys finding true love, and the authentic smells of large cities."
- Heidi Waterhouse, Goodreads

"the world has a texture and a past that appeals even as it appalls ... The characters have a lot of bad stuff happening to them, but they retain both agency and their moral sense. The darker scenes never devolve into hopelessness or pointless gore."
- Marissa Lingen, Novel Gazing Redux

"'Circus' is a steampunk fantasy piece told in a period voice. It has a thick Dickensian accent and the affectations of Christie, Shelley and Austen. It's sparking conversations you'd expect at a dinner party where Katherine Dunn, Cormac McCarthy and Kurt Vonnegut had a little too much wine. It's imaginative modern literature."
- Rob Callahan, “'A Circus of Brass and Bone' a sea change for indie authorship,” Vita.mn

Description
It's the end of civilization, but the show must go on.

The Loyale Traveling Circus and Menagerie is in turmoil. During their ocean voyage from British India to Boston, someone murdered their ringmaster. The killer must be one of their own. Unfortunately, that is the least of their problems.

While they were at sea, an aetheric calamity sent a wave of death rolling across the world. In post-Civil War America, a third of the population died outright, and many of the survivors suffer strange nervous symptoms that are steadily increasing in severity. Basic technology is also rendered dangerously unstable by the disaster. The circus members find themselves traveling through the collapse of civilization. In such desperate times, what use is a circus?

If they can defend themselves against the starving populace, if they can outwit and outperform the political factions that have seized power, if they can fight off the ravening monstrosities born of the aether storm ... they just might find the answer.
